I have a sturdy constitution, I never throw up. I&#8217;m rarely sick. I have a high pain threshold too \u2013 I break bones and don&#8217;t know it; I needed no drugs to give birth to either of my children (no, not even gas&amp;air). I&#8217;ve never fainted before in my life. That&#8217;s where I fainted!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Kate Forsyth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kateforsyth.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Forsyth<\/a> is the internationally bestselling author of more than twenty books for adults &amp; children, including <em>Bitter Greens, The Gypsy Crown, The Puzzle Ring <\/em>and the <em>Witches of Eileanan<\/em> series. She&#8217;s also a lovely person who always has time for fans and fellow writers. So I was very happy to support her back by attending the launch of her latest novel <em>The Wild Girl<\/em> on Friday evening. I was excited too because that afternoon I had typed the final words to my next novel. Of course the first thing I did when I got home was to write about the experience (you never know when a future character might faint). Ian talked about how much the speculative fiction landscape has changed since he started writing. Twenty years ago, Australia imported most of its speculative fiction from overseas and rarely took a chance on Australian authors. Dionne said that one of the advantages to being self-published is that she can react immediately to what&#8217;s working in the digital market and what&#8217;s not. According to Dirk Strasser (<a title=\"Aurealis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aurealis.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aurealis Magazine<\/a>) and Cat Sparks (<a title=\"Cosmos Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmosmagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cosmos Magazine<\/a>), we&#8217;re on the verge of a short story boom, mainly because short stories are such a good fit with epublication, as well as our busy modern age.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Angela Slatter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.angelaslatter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angela Slatter<\/a> and <a title=\"Lisa Hannett\" href=\"http:\/\/lisahannett.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lisa Hannett<\/a> parted with the following tips for short story writers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read broadly (Angela)<\/li>\n<li>Your first draft should never be your last (Angela)<\/li>\n<li>Go straight into your action \u2013 the key is crisis choice and consequence (Angela)<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t rush when polishing your writing (Lisa)<\/li>\n<li>Flense your story of extra words and infodumps (Lisa)<\/li>\n<li>Keep it short \u2013 few characters, focus on them (Lisa)<\/li>\n<li>Use beta readers (Angela &amp; Lisa)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_5689\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/CatLisaLizAngela.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5689\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5689\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/CatLisaLizAngela-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Cat Sparks, Lisa Hannett, Liz Grzyb &amp; Angela Slatter\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cat Sparks, Lisa Hannett, Liz Grzyb &amp; Angela Slatter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dirk said that when buying stories he looked for drama and focus: &#8220;every scene should be focussed on moving the character forward &#8230; Also, what&#8217;s at stake? One of Angela&#8217;s short stories was rejected fifteen times before being published. One of Lisa&#8217;s stories was rejected multiple times before being accepted at Clarkesworld. Ian Irvine did twenty-one drafts of his first novel before it was published!
