Richard was a university lecturer for ten years until he had the chance to become a full-time author\u2014and jumped at it. Before that, he was a folk musician and a poet who once did a poetry reading at the Sydney Opera House. But his deepest wish was always to write novels, and after twenty-five years of writer\u2019s block, he finally managed to finish his first novel at the age of forty-five.<\/p>\n

What he writes is fantasy, SF and horror, for Adult, Young Adult and Children\u2019s readerships. Since turning author, he’s had seventeen novels published by Allen & Unwin, Penguin, Pan Macmillan and Scholastic. His latest books have been his most successful: the steampunk YA fantasies Worldshaker<\/em>, <\/em>Liberator<\/em> and Song of the Slums, <\/em>which were also published in US, UK, France, Germany and Brazil. He’s won six Aurealis Awards for novels and short stories; also the prestigious Tam Tam Je Bouquine Award in France; and the A. Bertram Chandler Award for lifetime contribution to speculative fiction.<\/p>\n
