I read through every main character\u2019s dialogue from beginning to end, and only that dialogue, to make sure they each sound consistently like them. Because how a person speaks not only reflects their mindset and personality, but also their individual background and upbringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was reminded of this myself on a recent visit to England. It was so lovely to hear people in my hometown not only sounding like me (though having now lived in Australia for over twenty years, I have a clear Aussie twang), but communicating like me too \u2013 with questions rather than statements or opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My Australian born\/bred family are a lot more direct. For example, when discussing what to watch on TV of a night, I might say, \u2018We could watch <em>Planet of the Apes<\/em>?\u2019. What I mean of course is \u2018I would like to watch <em>Planet of the Apes\u2019<\/em>, and when my kids and husband realise this a few comments later, frustration abounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Why didn\u2019t you just say so?\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018I did.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018No, you made a suggestion.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Zena-Shapter-Bournemouth-pier.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"780\" src=\"http:\/\/zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Zena-Shapter-Bournemouth-pier.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15681\" style=\"width:326px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Zena-Shapter-Bournemouth-pier.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Zena-Shapter-Bournemouth-pier-300x234.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Zena-Shapter-Bournemouth-pier-768x599.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/zenashapter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Zena-Shapter-Bournemouth-pier-150x117.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The ways we speak can be oceans apart, Bournemouth Pier 2025<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that \u2019suggestion&#8217; was just my polite way of expressing what I\u2019d like to do! And when I was back in my hometown, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of people all communicating in the exact same way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018You might just want to mind your back there a moment?\u2019 they&#8217;d suggest, instead of the more direct Aussie version: \u2018Scuse, mate.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018There could be somewhere closer to town?\u2019 is how my brother replied when discussing whether to stop at a service station, instead of the Aussie: \u2018Nah, let&#8217;s keep going.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8216;Shall we just park here if it&#8217;s not too late?&#8217; I suggested, instead of shouting out: &#8216;There&#8217;s a park!&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What am I describing here? Wordiness? Meandering? A polite meandering wordiness? Whatever it is, I like it. It feels like home. Sometimes the differences can be subtle, and sometimes they can be more dramatic. Still, differences are always there, offering us resonance with our own lives.
