When I was a lawyer (in a past life, see here), I wanted to be a judge. I have a strong sense of fairness and enjoy listening to others. I have also always loved stories and for me a big part of being a lawyer was understanding and then communicating other people’s stories.
Now I’m a writer, my dream has come true! I’m a judge… a writing judge!
Last year I had the honour of judging the Australian Horror Writers’ Association Short Story Competition. Now this year I’ve been asked to judge the 2015 Ghostly Stringybark Award. Woo hoo!
The 2015 Ghostly Stringybark Award will go to the best 1,500-word ghost and/or horror story (for adults) that has an incidental connection to Australia (even if one of the characters simply loves vegemite!). First prize is $375 cash, publication and printed anthology. There are other prizes too. Entry fee $9.95. More details and conditions are here.
If you’d like to know what I look for in a short story, I posted about my AHWA judging experience here. Whether you’re interested in entering short story competitions or not, there are general writing tips there too.
Of course if you are thinking of entering this particular competition, then get writing! The competition closes on 16 August 2015, and I can’t wait to read your stories!
