How Technology Has Changed The Way We Share Our Lives #SWW #WomensInk

WomensInkFrontCoverWomensInkAussieAuthorZenaShapterThis week I’m in Women’s Ink, the magazine of the Society of Women Writers NSW, writing about the evolution of communication. This year, the Society of Women Writers NSW is celebrating both its 90th anniversary and its inaugural literary festival Dare to be an Author. So this special edition of their magazine celebrates the courage and daring writers need when setting their words free into the world, and my article looks at how modern technology has changed the way we do this.

The magazine is also stacked with inspiring articles written by Dr Wendy Michaels, Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Webby AM, Professor Di Yerbury AO, and award-winning investigative journalist Kate McClymont – so I’m in really good company!

Here’s the opening paragraph of my article…

WomensInkAustralianAuthorZenaShapterTechnology has changed the way we share our lives. We no longer write letters or send cards, instead we reveal private milestones by uploading photos to Instagram or Pinterest, we post opinions on Facebook, tweet congratulations, gossip via Snapchat, and spread citizen-journalism through the drumming of fingers on phone screens. We participate in micro-conversations online for anyone to see, or lurk and listen to them, such that, as Joel de Rosnay says, “Big Brother has become a million little brothers”. For those not up-to-date with the know-how, the idea of social media can be overwhelming. Yet with millions online every day… is it a case of get with the program or be left behind?

Want to read more? Then go along to the Dare to be an Author literary festival on Saturday 18th October, 9am til 4.45pm, because this edition of Women’s Ink will be available to attendees, as well as the society’s members.

If you can’t make it on Saturday 18th October, maybe you know someone who can – in which case please just forward the links on this page around. After all, sharing information is one of the many advantages of technology today!
